Rest in Peace, James Earl Jones

by Brett Manero

Filmmaking is a complicated process. There are so many elements that make up a part of that process: the idea, the story, the script that conveys that story, the principal shoot. Then there is the issue of casting the right actors for the right characters, the editing, the music, and so on.

Much of the time, a completed film contains one or several of these elements, but lacks in the other areas. Very occasionally, all of the elements come together to form a truly great film. And on really special occasions, all it takes is one more final touch to the film to make it into a timeless masterpiece.

The original Star Wars is a fine example. The addition of the great James Earl Jones as the voice of the Darth Vader is casting at its finest. The legendary actor’s baritone voice altered the film and the saga forever. Who can imagine what Star Wars would be like without the iconic character of Darth Vader, and the voice that goes with the character? Every film fan will remember the sound of Vader revealing the truth to Luke Skywalker that “No, I am your father,” being one of the most revered moments in the history of Cinema.

James Early Jones’ career was certainly not limited to Darth Vader, of course. Many will remember his voicing of Mufasa in The Lion King, his role as Admiral Greer in the Jack Ryan series (of which two films which also starred Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo in Star Wars), and a litany of other successful films and stage productions. He was a true acting legend.

More importantly, Jones seemed like a real gentleman, a titan of acting and film who was almost universally respected by his peers and fans. He never won a competitive Academy Award, but he rightly received an honorary Academy Award in 2012. He was an example of professionalism, humility, and a positive masculinity that shined in his roles.

Rest in peace, James Earl Jones. Thanks for your performances, your legendary voice, and your example of being a gentleman.
